Stage magician and after dinner magic show

A stage magician performs for the whole room at once, with everyone watching the same moment unfold. It brings an audience together in a way close-up magic can't, and gives an event a centrepiece people talk about afterwards.

We book stage magicians for gala dinners, awards evenings, private parties and theatres across the UK, including the married double act Jay & Joss. Here's how a stage or after dinner magic show works and what to plan for.

What happens in an after dinner magic show

An after dinner magic show usually runs for 20 to 45 minutes, once the meal is over and before the dancing or awards begin. Guests stay in their seats, volunteers are brought up to help, and the show builds to a big finish.

The style depends on the performer: comedy magic, mind reading, illusions or a mixture. Everyone sees the same thing at the same time, so the reaction ripples across the whole room.

Combining stage and close-up

Plenty of events book both. The magician performs close-up magic during the drinks reception, so guests feel they already know them, then takes the stage after dinner.

It's an efficient way to get the most from one booking, and several of our stage magicians also perform close-up. Ask about this when you enquire.

Large-scale illusion with Jay & Joss

For a headline act, Jay & Joss are a married magic duo who blend illusion with jaw-dropping stunts. In May 2024 their wedding-themed illusion won over the Britain's Got Talent judges, and that year The Magic Circle named them its Champions of Stage Illusion.

They have also appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, perform every year at the Royal Variety Aftershow, and are now starring in America's Got Talent: Live on Stage. Both are Associates of The Inner Magic Circle with Silver Stars.

What a stage magician needs from the venue

A clear performing area with good sight lines is essential: ideally a stage or raised platform, though a cleared space at the front of the room can work. Guests should be able to see without craning round pillars.

Most stage acts need a microphone and PA system, either the venue's or their own, plus time to set up and sound check before guests arrive. Larger illusion shows need more space, access for equipment and sometimes lighting, so share your venue details when you enquire.

Getting the timing right

Plan the show for when guests have eaten and settled but aren't flagging yet. Straight after dessert or coffee is usually spot on. Leaving it until after a long run of speeches, or until the bar has been busy for hours, makes it harder for any act.

Keep the room quiet during the performance. If you can, pause bar service and ask the venue not to clear tables while the show is on.

Absolutely brilliant! Performed at our wedding and left all of our guests speechless. Not only excellent magic but a terrific performer too. Delivers every trick to perfection and keeps you entertained. Some of the tricks are completely mind boggling. Highly recommended for any event. Best magician I've ever seen, can't speak highly enough of him!

In all honestly Tom was in actual fact one of the best parts of our wedding ! He looked incredibly dapper and his attire fit well with our farm venue, upon arrival he sought me and my (new) husband out to introduce himself and we pointed him to the group of mates he would get a good laugh from. Upon that first bit of magic all our guests were mesmerised.…

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long is an after dinner magic show?

Most run for 20 to 45 minutes. A shorter set suits a busy evening with awards or speeches, while a longer show can be the main entertainment.

How much does a stage magician cost?

A professional stage or after dinner show typically costs around £500 to £1,500, while well-known television acts are priced individually. The exact quote depends on the show, the date, travel and technical needs.

Do we need a stage?

Not always. A raised area helps everyone see, but many stage magicians can work from a cleared space at the front of the room as long as the sight lines are good.

Does a stage show work for a small party?

Yes. A parlour-style show for a few dozen guests in a function room or large living room can be just as effective, and often more intimate.
