Birmingham's big conference and gala events
Birmingham is one of the UK's main conference cities. The ICC hosts gala dinners, awards and company milestones, and many delegates arrive knowing only a handful of people. Close-up magic during the pre-dinner reception breaks the ice and gives sponsors and hosts a talking point.
At large dinners, the best approach is usually table-to-table magic between courses, timed with the catering team so it never delays service. If the event has a stage programme, a short mind reading or comedy magic set can sit neatly between the awards and the band.
One tip from experience: if there's a drinks reception in a foyer before the doors open to the hall, that's the moment to book magic for. Guests are standing in clusters, they've got a drink in hand and they're waiting. A magician turning that half hour into the bit everyone's chatting about at dinner is money well spent.
Hotel ballrooms and garden weddings
For weddings, the choice ranges from The Grand Hotel on Colmore Row, whose ballroom dates from the 1890s, to Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston, where function suites sit within 15 acres of landscaped gardens. Just outside the city, Hampton Manor in Hampton-in-Arden offers country-house weddings with exclusive use of the estate.
Each setting suggests a different style. In a hotel ballroom, magic keeps guests entertained while the room is turned around between the meal and the evening do. In a garden venue, a magician can move between groups on the lawn during summer drinks and then follow everyone indoors when the light fades.
Jewellery Quarter, Digbeth and the smaller venues
Birmingham isn't all conference halls. The Jewellery Quarter and Digbeth have a good spread of smaller spaces, from restaurants with private rooms to warehouse venues that suit relaxed weddings and launch parties.
In a smaller room you don't need much. One close-up magician for 90 minutes to two hours is usually plenty for up to around a hundred guests, and it fits nicely before food or around a DJ set. If the space is standing only, roaming magic is the way to go. Simple as that.

Getting the logistics right
Birmingham city centre is inside a Clean Air Zone, and parking near Colmore Row and Centenary Square fills up on busy evenings. We check travel and parking with the magician, and it helps if you can tell us about loading access or reserved spaces.
Birmingham weddings, including many South Asian celebrations, can be large and run over long days. If you're expecting several hundred guests, consider booking two magicians or a longer set so that every table gets a visit. We can talk through what works for your numbers.
