Tudor and Georgian venues
Essex has some of the finest historic wedding venues in the region. Layer Marney Tower near Colchester is a Tudor house with a parish church in its grounds, and Gosfield Hall near Halstead is a Georgian mansion with lawns, gardens and a lake. Prested Hall in Feering, with its moat and parkland, offers receptions in its Orangery or a marquee.
These are venues with long receptions and beautiful grounds. A magician can start on the lawn during drinks, keep guests entertained while the couple are away for photos, then visit tables during the meal. It's low-key entertainment that doesn't compete with the setting.
Country hotels and bigger parties
For larger celebrations, Down Hall near Hatfield Heath, a historic house in 110 acres of grounds, hosts weddings, corporate retreats and Christmas parties. Hotel venues like this mean guests can stay over, so evenings often go on late.
With a party crowd, interactive comedy magic works brilliantly. A short stand-up set before the first dance or the DJ starts gets everyone laughing together, and roaming magic later on catches the guests who aren't dancing.
Big Essex weddings also tend to have a lot of evening guests arriving after the meal. That's another good slot for magic, because new arrivals often stand around at the edges while the day guests are already settled. A magician going round those groups gets everyone into the swing of it.
Tips for booking in Essex
Essex is well connected by the A12 and M11, but Friday afternoon traffic towards the coast and around Chelmsford can be slow. We build that into arrival times, and it helps to know about parking and which door to use.
Popular Essex venues book out well ahead for summer Saturdays. So do good entertainers. Once your venue and date are confirmed, it's worth getting your magician booked soon after.
Birthdays, christenings and office dos
Not everything's a wedding. Essex bookings include fortieths and fiftieths in restaurants and golf clubs, christening parties at home, and office Christmas parties in Chelmsford, Brentwood and along the A12.
For a party at home, close-up magic is perfect because it needs no space at all. A magician can work the kitchen, the garden and the living room, and nobody has to move the furniture. For an office party, an hour of roaming magic over drinks gets people from different teams chatting before the food comes out.
